Model Question and Answers for APSC | Sikkim is the first ‘Organic State’ in India. What are the ecological and economical benefits of an Organic State?

Ans : Sikkim has become India’s first fully organic state by implementing organic practices on around 75,000 hectares of agricultural land. Organic cultivation is free of chemical pesticides and chemical fertilisers as it tries to strike a harmonious balance with a complex series of ecosystems.
The ecological benefits of an Organic State
1. Minimizing soil erosion by up to 50% and holistic Land quality improvement as using artificial components in agriculture degrade the land quality
2. Fertilizers and pesticides that are added in commercial farming end up in water bodies through run-off water. These cause pollution of rivers and lakes in a condition called eutrophication.
3. Organic farming is practised in natural environments that do not restrict the movement of any organisms. This creates a small farm ecosystem in which a large number of organisms are sheltered.
4.Elimination of toxic chemicals augments biodiversity in the long run
The economical benefits of an Organic State
1. Certified organic products have huge demand in global markets
2. By switching to organic farming, conventional farmers can actually reduce their production cost by over 25% as compared to the cost of conventional farming as it eliminates the use of expensive synthetic fertilizers and pesticides
3. It will also reduce the subsidy burden on the government
4. More Productivity through the incorporation of natural processes like natural cycles, nitrogen fixation and pest-predator relationship into the agricultural production process.
