Existing Legal Provisions Against It:

• The Indian Evidence Act,1872
• The Sexual Harassment of Women at Workplace (PREVENTION, PROHIBITION and REDRESSAL) Act, 2013
• The Criminal Law (Amendment) Act, 2013

• The Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act, 2012
Despite having strict laws to deal with such cases, there has been an increase in such instances. Innovative measures need to be taken to tackle this menace effectively.
• Education And Awareness Programs: The government should launch education and awareness programs to sensitize people about the gravity of sexual violence. These programs should be targeted towards both men and women and should be made mandatory in schools and colleges.
• Increase In The Number Of Fast-Track Courts: The existing legal provisions should be strengthened by increasing the number of fast-track courts for speedy trials of sexual violence cases. The judgments should be exemplary, and the conviction rate should be high to deter others from committing such crimes.
• Use Of Technology: Technology can play a significant role in preventing and detecting sexual violence cases. The government can launch an app that women can use to report any suspicious activities or harassment. The app can also provide information about safe zones in the city and self-defence techniques.
• Implementation Of Gender-Sensitive Policies: Gender-sensitive policies should be implemented in all sectors of society, including education, health, and the workplace. Such policies can help in creating a gender-neutral environment and reducing gender-based discrimination.
• Collaboration With Civil Society Organizations: The government should collaborate with civil society organizations that work towards preventing sexual violence. Such organizations can provide support to victims of sexual violence and also conduct awareness programs in remote areas.
Sexual violence against women is a complex issue that requires a multi- pronged approach. The government, civil society organizations, and individuals need to work together to prevent such crimes and ensure justice for victims. The measures suggested above can play a significant role in tackling this menace effectively.
